Charles A. Lyons is chief executive officer of The Gazette community newspaper group and The Herald in Everett, Washington.
He joined The Washington Post Company in 1993 as president and publisher of The Gazette in Montgomery County, Maryland. In 2001 he assumed corporate management responsibility of The Herald newspaper operations in Everett, Washington.
During Lyons' tenure The Gazette has received 10 awards for General Excellence from the Suburban Newspapers of America and the Tech Media technology newsmagazines have won three Neale awards.
Lyons served as president of the Strathmore Hall Arts Center Board of Directors and chair of the Steering Committee for Strathmore's $90 million Concert Hall and Education Center. He is a founding board member of the Montgomery County Community Foundation, co-chaired the Montgomery Community College Humanities Endowment Campaign, and was a member of the capital campaign for the Reginald S. Lourie Center to create a new Children's Center.
He is a graduate of Leadership Montgomery and past president of its Board of Directors and is a graduate of Leadership Maryland. He also served on the Montgomery County Economic Advisory Council.
Lyons served as chair of Montgomery's Promise to its Children and Youth in 1997 that resulted in Gazette Newspapers adopting a local elementary school. In 1999 he was the recipient of the Salute to Youth Award presented by the Greater Washington Metropolitan YMCA. Lyons was honored in 1998 for his service to youth by the Boys and Girls Club, Montgomery Chapter, and the Boy Scouts of America.
Lyons was born in Michigan. He graduated with a Master of Arts degree in journalism from Michigan State University. His newspaper career has included positions from reporter to editor to marketing director to publisher in Michigan, Texas, South Carolina, Virginia, New Jersey, and Maryland. In 1983 the newspaper he published in Easton, Maryland, received an Edward J. Meeman award for its support and coverage of the efforts to restore the Chesapeake Bay.
He has served as president of Suburban Newspapers of America. |
