Charles A. James is vice president and general counsel for Chevron Corporation.Most recently, he was assistant attorney general in charge of the Antitrust Division at the U.S. Department of Justice. Prior to his assignment at the Justice Department, James practiced law at Jones, Day, Reavis & Pogue in Washington, D.C., where he chaired the firm's worldwide antitrust and trade regulation practice.James received his bachelor's degree in 1976 from Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut and his law degree in 1979 from the National Law Center at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. He joined the Federal Trade Commission where, from 1979 to 1985, he served in several positions, including assistant to the director of the commission's Bureau of Competition. In 1985, he joined the international law firm Jones Day.James interrupted his tenure to serve in the first Bush administration as deputy assistant attorney general and later as acting assistant attorney general.James returned to Jones Day in 1993. His practice concentrated primarily on antitrust matters, including mergers, acquisitions and joint ventures, particularly in the telecommunications, health care, information technology and financial services industries. He has extensive international and regulatory experience in and out of government.He assumed his current position on Dec. 2, 2002.James has been active in numerous professional and public service organizations. He has held leadership positions in the American Bar Association's Business Law and Antitrust Law sections and has been a member of the Antitrust Council of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.James was born in 1954. |
