Cathy is an attorney with Krugliak, Wilkins, Griffiths & Dougherty Co., L.P.A. in the firm’s Health Care Practice Group. Her practice is focused on HIPAA compliance, anti-kickback and self-referral laws, fraud and abuse, managed care regulatory issues, and physician group practice services.
Cathy is also an advanced practice registered nurse with experience in administration, education and clinical practice. She has served on various corporate compliance committees, prepared for JCAHO accreditations and Ohio Department of Health licensing surveys, and implemented HIPAA privacy and security standards. As an experienced educator and nurse attorney, she frequently provides legal education for health care clients and their staffs.
Additionally, Cathy is uniquely qualified as a certified coding specialist by the American Health Information Management Association. She advises physician practices on matters of coding accuracy, third-party reimbursement, self-disclosure, and corrective action plans. She conducts external audits of coding and billing functions in support of compliance initiatives.
Cathy came to our firm from Akron General Medical Center where she worked extensively with the management team, university educators, and clinicians. She has been a legal nurse consultant in private practice providing expert witness testimony. She has held a Certificate of Authority in Ohio to practice as a Clinical Nurse Specialist. Cathy is a past faculty member for Kent State University’s College of Nursing and Akron City Hospital’s School of Nursing.
Originally a native of Columbiana County, Cathy obtained her Diploma in Nursing at Aultman School of Nursing, her Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing at Kent State University, her Masters of Science Degree in Nursing at Case Western Reserve University, and her Juris Doctorate at The University of Akron School of Law. When at the law school, Cathy was a member of the Moot Court Honor Society, competing in the American Bar Association’s National Appellate Advocacy Competition.
Cathy is a member of the American, Ohio, Stark, Akron and Cleveland Bar Associations, and a member of The American Association of Nurse Attorneys and the American Health Lawyers Association. She is also a member of the American and Ohio Nurses Associations. Cathy resides in Stow and has three grown children. |
