Cathal Phelan joined Virage Logic’s board in March 2006. Phelan is chief executive officer of Ubicom, Inc., a leading provider of wireless communications processors and software platforms. Prior to joining Ubicom in April 2006, Phelan spent nearly 15 years at Cypress Semiconductor in various management roles. Most recently he had served as vice president of the Data Communications Division at Cypress Semiconductor, responsible for growing the company's WAN, SAN and wireless infrastructure businesses, which included solutions for switches, routers, transport, basestations and data access applications.
Prior to that, Phelan headed up Cypress’ Personal Communications Division (now the Consumer and Computation Division) which, under his five and a half year leadership, was able to claim better than 40 percent market share in the standalone USB market. Phelan also oversaw the successful launch of the company's WirelessUSB radio-system-on-a-chip product family.
Other positions Phelan held since joining Cypress in January 1991, included design director, new products director, synchronous business unit manager, and RAM3 design project leader in the Memory Products Division (MPD). Prior to his tenure at Cypress, Phelan spent six years at the Philips Research Laboratories in Eindhoven, Netherlands, where he worked in the Advanced Memory Design Center on innovative memory architecture and design. Phelan currently holds 37 U.S. patents.
Phelan graduated from the Engineering School of Trinity College at the University of Dublin in Ireland. He received a BAI (1st class) (BSEE equivalent in the U.S.), a bachelors degree in mathematics and a masters degree in micro-electronic engineering (MSEE equivalent in the U.S.). |
