Professional Experience
Ms. Ruga is one of the Firmīs intellectual property specialists with expertise in both IP litigation and IP transactional work. She also has experience with traditional business litigation matters, including disputes involving employment claims of all varieties, business contracts, fiduciary obligations, fraud, and unfair competition. She has represented individual and corporate clients in both federal and state courts, as well as in arbitration and mediation, and has tried cases involving partnership disputes and contract issues.
Ms. Rugaīs IP litigation practice includes disputes involving patent rights, trade secrets, trade dress, trademark, and copyright issues. For instance, Ms. Ruga has assisted in the representation of a multinational corporation accused of violating a competitorīs copyrights in certain project materials. She assisted another corporate client protect its trademarks from infringement. She also has assisted individuals, such as photographers, protect their IP rights from infringers.
Ms. Rugaīs transactional practice focuses on the procurement, protection and licensing of intellectual property rights, including trademarks and copyrights, and the registration and enforcement of internet domain names. Ms. Ruga searches and clears trademarks, prosecutes both domestic and international trademark applications, and represents clients in opposition and cancellation proceedings before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board. She also advises clients in the naming and branding process, manages domestic and international trademark portfolios, and negotiates and drafts agreements effectuating the transfer of intellectual property rights.
