Casey Smith is in his third season as the Mavericks’ head athletic trainer after spending four years on the sports medicine staff of the Phoenix Suns.
Prior to his work in the NBA, Smith was the athletic trainer for men’s basketball at Arizona State University from 1997-2000 and the director of athletic training services at Morgantown Physical Therapy Associates in West Virginia before that. Smith is a 1992 graduate of Arizona State University with a bachelor’s degree in exercise science and received his master’s degree from West Virginia University in 1994.
He is also a member of the Professional Advisory Board for the National Academy of Sports Medicine. Smith has also spent time working for the United States Olympic Committee and USA Basketball.
This past summer, he was appointed as an athletic trainer for the U.S. Senior Men’s National team and will serve in that capacity through the 2008 Olympics. Other assignments have included men’s basketball at the 2003 Pan American Games in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic and the athletic trainer for men’s boxing at the 2004 Summer Olympic games in Athens, Greece.
In the summer of 2005, he traveled to Buenos Aries, Argentina with the NBA’s Basketball Without Borders program. Smith is a native of Wellston, Ohio. He and his wife Michelle reside in Dallas. |
