Carmella L. Stephens Counsel in the New York Office and has substantial experience in a wide variety of intellectual property matters, with a particular emphasis in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries. In particular, Dr. Stephens has prepared and prosecuted many applications involving gene therapy, RNA based therapeutics, bioassays, immunobiology, signal transduction and genomics, to name a few. Dr. Stephens has also counseled clients on legal issues relating to biotechnology and pharmaceutical patents, including patent enforcement, validity and infringement, licensing, and business development.
Dr. Stephens has been an instructor for the Practising Law Institute's yearly Conference on Advanced Claim Drafting & Amendment Writing in Biotechnology Practice. She is involved in the New York Biotechnology Association (NYBA) and recently presented a talk on the current status of U.S. Patent Reform at NYBA’s Annual Meeting. She is also a member of the New York Academy of Science and the Association of University Technology Managers, Inc. (AUTM).
Dr. Stephens’ thesis research was conducted at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory and centered on adenovirus E1A proteins and their role in cell proliferation. After receiving her Ph.D., she completed a post-doctoral fellowship at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Institute where her research focused on transforming growth factor-ß mediated signal transduction.
While attending Fordham University School of Law in the evening, Dr. Stephens worked as a law clerk at a major intellectual law firm in New York. |
