Summary:Calvin Smyre is Executive Vice President of Corporate Affairs at Synovus Financial Corp., a multi-billion dollar, diversified financial services company that provides a broad set of products and services that touch people around the world. Synovus Financial Corp. is headquartered in Columbus, Georgia, and has a rich history of growth and success that dates back to 1888. Calvin earned his Bachelor of Science Degree from Fort Valley State College in Business Administration. Calvin was elected to the Georgia House of Representatives as its youngest member at age 26. During 1979-1980 he served as Chairman of the Georgia Legislative Black Caucus and from 1982 to 1988 he served as President of the Georgia Association of Black Elected Officials. Presently, he is on the Executive Committee of the National Black Caucus of State Legislators and is Vice Chairman of the Assembly on the Legislature of the National Conference of State Legislators, both headquartered in Washington, D.C. In 1983, Georgia Governor Joe Frank Harris appointed him Assistant Administrative Floor Leader and in 1986, Governor Harris appointed him to the position of Administrative Floor Leader, where he served until 1990. In 1991, he was appointed by Speaker of the House Thomas B. Murphy to Chair the House Industrial Relations Committee and served until 1993. In 1993, he was appointed as Chairman of the House University System of Georgia Committee, which has oversight for the 34 public colleges and universities in the state of Georgia. He also serves on the standing Appropriations Committee, Rules Committee, as well as the House Budget Sub-Committee, Fiscal Affairs Sub-Committee and the Budget Responsibility Oversight Committee. Calvin is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Morehouse School of Medicine, Medical College of Georgia Foundation, the Jack D. Hughston Sports Medicine Hospital Foundation, the Columbus Museum and the Fort Valley State College Foundation.In 1980, Calvin was selected by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution as one of the Ten Best Legislators in the state, and in 1985 was selected by his peers as the National Legislator of the Year. He has been honored twice as Citizen of the Year in Columbus, Georgia. He has most recently been named Chairman and CEO of the Synovus Foundation, Incorporated, the organization that directs corporate and philanthropic gifts from Synovus Financial Corp. |
