The Dallas Cowboys announced the hiring of Bruce Read as special teams coach on February 22, 2007. Read spent the past three seasons serving as the special teams coordinator at Oregon State. His 2006 unit was among the best in Oregon State history as Sammie Stroughter set the school record with three punt returns for touchdowns and Alexis Serna set a school record with 106 consecutive made extra point attempts. In 2005 Read coached the Lou Groza Award recipient, placekicker Alexis Serna, recognizing the nation's premier kicker.
Read spent the 2002 and 2003 seasons as the special teams coach for the New York Giants and in 2003 the Giants special teams' unit improved in six-of-eight statistical categories. Read also served as the special teams coach for the San Diego Chargers (1999-2001), and the Chargers led the NFL in 2001 with a kickoff return average of 26.0 yards, 4.4 yards more than the NFL average that season.
Read served as special teams coach at Oregon State from 1997-98, his first tenure with the Beavers, where the special teams blocked 15 kicks under his guidance. In 1998, OSU ranked second in the Pac-10 in field goal percentage (.654) connecting on 17-of-26 attempts. Read began his coaching career in 1985 at the University of Montana and was named the special teams coach in 1987 where he remained for 10 years.
