Bruce S. Kaplan has served as lead counsel in a number of complex commercial and securities cases. His practice includes representation of corporate directors and officers in securities class actions. He has represented a major pharmaceutical company in negotiations and litigation arising from licensing and manufacturing agreements. In addition, he has served as counsel to a large media and entertainment company in employment discrimination investigations and litigation.
Mr. Kaplan's trial practice has included representation of a manufacturer of footwear and apparel in a successful jury trial arising out of a failed acquisition. He was lead trial counsel in a multiparty action in federal court involving the destruction by fire of a landmarked historical building. His current caseload includes federal and state antitrust litigation; representation of former directors of the Connecticut Resources Recovery Authority sued in connection with losses resulting from transactions with an Enron subsidiary; litigation against Marsh & McLennan Companies on behalf of a group of management consultants who agreed to accept Marsh stock as part of their consideration in an acquisition transaction; and representation of former corporate directors and officers in an upcoming trial of a securities fraud action.
Mr. Kaplan graduated from Columbia College in 1963 and from Harvard Law School in 1966. Following service in the U.S. Air Force, he was an associate at Kelley, Drye & Warren and then in the litigation department at Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison. From 1978 until 1981, he served as Chief Assistant Corporation Counsel of New York City. In that position he had supervisory responsibility for all litigations in which the City was a party, and personally served as the City's lead trial counsel in many significant litigations involving federal securities laws, product liability, federal and state constitutional principles, and municipal contracts. In addition to his litigation practice, Mr. Kaplan has conducted a weekly seminar in Pre-Trial Litigation Tactics and Strategies for lawyers at the New York City Law Department, and also has served as a Trustee of the Federal Bar Council and as Chair of the Council's Bench and Bar Conference. He currently serves as a member of the Judiciary Committee of The Association of the Bar of the City of New York.
