Brad A. Bowlus was appointed president and CEO of PacifiCare Health Systems' Health Plan division in September 1999. In his role he oversees all aspects of health plan performance in 37 states including Health Services, Network Contracting, Sales & Marketing and Underwriting for both Commercial and Senior Business. Prior to this appointment, he served as president and CEO of PacifiCare of California from 1997 to 1999. He also served as president and CEO of PacifiCare of Washington from 1996 to 1997. In addition, he served as president and CEO of PacifiCare Dental & Vision, and California Dental Health Plan, from 1995 to 1996. He also served as vice president of PacifiCare's Southern California region from April 1994 to August 1995. Bowlus joined PacifiCare in 1994 after having spent 14 years with WellPoint Health Networks Inc., the managed care subsidiary of Blue Cross of California. At WellPoint, he served in a variety of financial, provider contracting and operational roles including regional director, sales and service, overseeing Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, Ventura and San Luis Obispo counties. Bowlus has been responsible for the design and implementation of several managed care plans. He was a key contributor in the early design and implementation of provider payment mechanisms, including capitation and preferred provider organization programs. Bowlus received his bachelor's degree in business from California State University, Northridge and his master of business administration degree from Pepperdine University.
Bowlus served on the board of TheraSense Inc. in 2003/2004. TheraSense Inc. developed, manufactured and sold glucose self-monitoring systems prior to be acquired by Abbott Laboratories.
He is a member of the Young Presidents' Organization (YPO) and maintains organizational affiliations including: board member, Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Orange County; member, California State University Northridge Business Advisory Council; and member, West Coast Healthcare Executive Roundtable. |
