Bill Tessendorf, named the Ravens' vice president of medical services in 2005, is in his 34th season with the franchise...He is the 2nd-longest tenured trainer in the NFL (John Omohundro has been with the Arizona Cardinals for 38 years).
Bill and his assistants, Mark Smith (who has been with the club since 1979), Kevin Domboski and Kyle Schimmoeller, have earned the reputation as one of the top training staffs in the league.
Tessendorf was inducted into the Northern Illinois Athletic Hall of Fame in 2000 and the Ohio Athletic Trainers' Hall of Fame in Athens, OH, in April, 1999. Tessendorf also received the 1998 National Athletic Trainers Association's (NATA) Most Distinguished Athletic Trainer Award.
In 1989, Bill's crew was honored as the "NFL's Athletic Training Staff of the Year" by the Professional Football Athletic Trainers Society...The group was recognized at the annual Ed Block Courage Awards banquet held in Baltimore.
The Ohio Athletic Trainers' Association recognized Bill's talent by bestowing upon him the Clinical/Professional Trainer of the Year Award in May of 1989.
Tessendorf 1st joined the Browns as an assistant trainer in 1973 while working towards his master's degree in exercise physiology, which he received from Kent State University in 1976...He did his undergraduate work at Northern Illinois University, graduating with a B.S. in education in 1971...Under KSU coach Don James, Bill was a graduate assistant for a year, then took a job as an elementary school teacher in the DeKalb (IL) public school system (1972).
In the summer of 1972, Tessendorf wo r ked with former veteran Browns trainer Leo Murphy...Bill served as treasurer of the Professional Football Athletic Trainers Society for 10 years...He is also past President of the Great Lakes Athletic Trainers Association.
As he did with the Cleveland Browns' facility in 1990-91, Bill coordinated the construction and design of the new Ravens' training complex, which opened in October 2004...Bill and his wife, Nan Jean, and daughter, Amy, a recent University of Maryland graduate, live in Carroll County, MD. |
