Bill Rothwell was appointed vice president, Innovation and Chemicals Technology with Shell Global Solutions Inc. in 2007. He is based in Houston and with employees based in Europe, US and Asia, has global responsibility for identifying and leveraging innovation and chemical technology across the Shell Group, including Shell Chemicals.
A Shell employee for more than 26 years, Bill has a strong technical background combined with extensive experience in strategy and business.
He joined Shell in 1980 with a PhD in Physical Chemistry from MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), where he specialised in solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. He has undergraduate degrees in mathematics and chemistry from Michigan State University.
Bill began his Shell career in the analytical department of the Westhollow Technology Center in Houston. In 1985, he became research manager of the Exploratory Polymers research group, where he was instrumental in establishing the Carilon project one of the first truly joint chemical research programmes between the Houston and Amsterdam laboratories.
Between 1990 and 1997, Bill served in a number of business strategy, planning and commercial roles at One Shell Plaza. In 1998 he relocated to London and served as head of the CSSP strategy, Planning and Ventures department for Shell Chemicals just as Shell Chemicals globalised. In 2002, Bill was appointed general manager of Shell’s global Ethylene Oxide/Glycols business.
Having begun his Shell career in research and development, Bill is pleased to return to his roots in technology and lead a global team with the aim of becoming the very best supplier of innovation and technology in the energy business and a leading source of value to the Shell Group. |
