Bernadette M. Broccolo is a partner in the law firm of McDermott Will & Emery LLP based in its Chicago office. Bernadette is a member of the Health Law Department, and has been counseling health industry organizations for 27 years on legal and regulatory compliance matters, information technology acquisition and health information privacy. Bernadette also currently serves as chair of the Life Sciences Steering Committee of the Firm's Health Law Department.
Bernadette advises clients on leading edge health industry relationship formation and realignments (e.g., joint ventures, governance restructurings, and relationships between institutional providers and physicians); health information technology acquisitions and electronic health information networks; conflict of interest compliance; comprehensive programs for human subject, animal and bench research; and overall corporate compliance programs. Her specialties include the full scope of legal and regulatory compliance in the areas of federal taxation of exempt organizations and not-for-profit corporate governance, privacy, human subject protection and technology contracting.
Bernadette is a frequent speaker and author on topics in her areas of practice. She is co-author of Tax-Exempt Status of Health Care Organizations, which is part of BNA’s Health Law & Business Series. She also serves in leadership positions for organizations serving the health industry and the legal profession, including the American Health Lawyers Association, the Illinois Association of Hospital Attorneys and the American Bar Association. Most recently, she served as a member of the Governing Council of the American Bar Association’s Health Law Section and as the Chair of the Health Law Section’s Tax & Accounting Interest Group.
Bernadette has been named as a Fellow of the American Health Lawyers Association. She has also been selected by her peers to be included in the 2007 edition of The Best Lawyers in America for her expertise in health care law, a listing she has made for the past 16 years. Bernadette is listed as a leading individual in health care in Illinois in Chambers USA 2007: America’s Leading Lawyers for Business. She was named a 2008 Illinois Super Lawyer based upon a survey of 47,000 attorneys throughout Illinois; only 5 percent of Illinois attorneys received this distinction.
