Ben Thomas was born in Minot, North Dakota, and raised in Ontario, Canada. In 1982, he returned to the United States to attend the University of North Dakota. He received his Bachelor's Degree in Economics, and in 1989 received his Juris Doctor from the University of North Dakota School of Law. As a law student, Ben studied in Oslo, Norway, as part of the UND law student exchange program. Ben has been in private practice in Fargo since 1989. His practice is devoted primarily to employment law and civil litigation. In 1997, Ben tried a sexual harassment lawsuit that resulted in the largest such jury verdict ever awarded in eastern North Dakota. Ben is a frequent lecturer on topics relating to employment law. His audiences typically include human resource personnel, managers, and business owners. Ben is currently the Secretary-Treasurer of the Cass County Bar Association. His is a member of the American Trial Lawyers Association, the North Dakota Trial Lawyers Association, and the Academy of Family Law Mediators. Since 1996, Ben has served as a Temporary Administrative Law Judge, presiding over contested Worker's Compensation hearings involving the North Dakota Worker's Compensation Bureau. In 2000, Ben was named "Boss of the Year" by the Fargo Chapter of the National Association of Legal Secretaries. In that same year, Ben was featured on the cover of Fargo-Moorhead Today magazine as one of its "People to Watch in 2001". Ben serves on the Administration Committee of St. John Lutheran Church in Fargo. Ben's wife is a lawyer with the Child Support Enforcement Unit of the Cass County States Attorney.
