Barrett Golden develops and implements strategic financial communications for clients across a wide range of industries. She joined Joele Frank, Wilkinson Brimmer Katcher at its inception in January 2000.
Special situations on which Ms. Golden has advised include Energy East in its combination with IBERDROLA; Hologic in its merger with Cytyc; Western Refining in its acquisition of Giant Industries; PNM Resources in its joint venture with Cascade Investment; NRG Energy’s defense against an unsolicited proposal from Mirant and its previous acquisition of Texas Genco; Novartis in its acquisition of Chiron; multiple transactions involving Fisher Scientific, including its merger with Thermo Electron; and adidas’ acquisition of Reebok. She also represented the Special Committee of Cox Communications’ Board of Directors in Cox Enterprises’ acquisition of the Company; TRW in its merger with Northrop Grumman (and in its prior response to Northrop Grumman’s unsolicited offer); CenturyTel in its defense against an unsolicited proposal from Alltel; Conoco in its merger with Phillips Petroleum; Cooper Industries in its defense against an unsolicited proposal from Danaher; and Unilever in its acquisition of Bestfoods.
Recent projects involving shareholder activism and/or proxy contests include, Oglebay Norton in its defense against an unsolicited offer from and proxy fight against Harbinger Capital; InfoSpace in its response to Sandell Asset Management; MedImmune in its response to Matrix Asset Advisors; Gateway in its response to an investor group led by Firebrand Partners and Harbinger Capital; The Brink’s Company in its responses to Pirate Capital and MMI; Houston Exploration in its response to various proposals submitted by JANA Partners; Western Gas, and separately Ligand Pharmaceuticals, in response to Third Point; and VISX’s successful defense against multiple proxy contests initiated by Carl Icahn.
Ms. Golden has also advised numerous companies on how to manage business and communications issues arising from product recalls, accounting irregularities, earnings surprises, executive departures, litigation and corporate governance issues. Her clients have included Atmel, The Brink’s Company, Charter Communications, Cytyc, International Flavors & Fragrances, Snap-on, and St. Jude Medical, among others. In addition, Ms. Golden works with a number of clients to develop and manage ongoing investor and media relations programs, including Catterton Partners, Eastman Chemical, Energy East, St. Jude Medical and Williams.
In recognition of her achievements, Ms. Golden was named to PR Week’s 2007.
Prior to joining Joele Frank, Wilkinson Brimmer Katcher, Ms. Golden was an Account Executive at Abernathy MacGregor Frank. Previously, she worked for Kirby McInerney & Squire, LLP, a plaintiff’s law firm specializing in securities fraud, antitrust and consumer fraud class actions. Earlier, Ms. Golden served in the office of Congressman Bob Goodlatte.
Ms. Golden graduated from the University of Virginia with a B.A. in government. Post graduation, she attended the University of Virginia’s McIntire Institute for Business. |
