Joining Stewart in early 2006, Smith most recently served as Vice Chancellor for Governmental Relations and Policy for the University of Texas System. He has a 35-year résumé in corporate governance, administrative law, governmental affairs and real estate.
A graduate of the University of Texas and its School of Law, Smith began his career working for Southwestern Group Financial, a publicly traded company, eventually becoming its Vice President and General Counsel. He also served as General Counsel to the 1990 Economic Summit of Industrialized Nations (G-7) that was held in Houston. A member of the Texas House of Representatives from Harris County for 14 years, Smith chaired several committees, including the Budget and Oversight committee that oversaw the Texas Department of Insurance. Prior to joining the UT System, Smith was President and CEO of The Institute for Rehabilitation and Research (TIRR), a nationally ranked rehabilitation and research facility with its main location in the Texas Medical Center.
A licensed attorney in the state of Texas, Smith also holds a master of laws degree in international and environmental law from the University of Houston. |
