Mr. Hargrove holds a Bachelor of Architecture degree (1972) and a Master of Science degree (1977) in Civil (Structural) Engineering from the University of Tennessee. He has been a Registered Architect and a Professional Engineer since 1981. Mr. Hargrove also served three years active duty (1972-1975) in the US Army Security Agency, studying the Korean Language at the Army’s Defense Language Institute for a year in preparation for serving in Korea as a Linguist.
After Graduate School, Mr. Hargrove worked for ten years at Kennedy Space Center in Florida. During this time, he became an active member of the professional societies of his two professions, the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and the American Institute of Architects (AIA). He served as an officer in each organization and championed joint meetings between the two groups, especially when legislative issues affecting both professions were being discussed in the state capitol. Although remaining active in both organizations, more time and energy was devoted to the AIA as Mr. Hargrove served successively as Secretary, Treasurer, Vice-president, and President of the local chapter and then for two years as a State Director for the Florida Association of the AIA.
In 1987, Mr. Hargrove moved to Huntsville, Alabama, continuing to work in support of NASA, but now at Marshall Space Flight Center. In Huntsville, Mr. Hargrove has continued active involvement in the ASCE and the AIA. He has served in all the officer positions of the North Alabama Chapter of the AIA and for the last four years as an officer in the Alabama Council of the AIA, currently serving as the Second Vice-president.
In 1988, Mr. Hargrove became one of the founding partners of AJT and Associates, and the Vice-president and Director of Huntsville Operations for the new company. This company, with headquarters in Cape Canaveral, Florida, but with an office in Huntsville, Alabama from its inception, provides a full range of architectural services, engineering, construction management, facility support, and environmental services. This company has grown from a beginning work force of two people in Huntsville and five people in Cape Canaveral to a staff of seventy-two in Huntsville and more than eighty in Cape Canaveral.
Mr. Hargrove has over 30 years of experience in project management, architecture and engineering, design and supervision. His responsibilities have included design and analysis of office, dining, laboratory, testing, medical, training, auditorium and classroom facilities, access platforms, power distribution systems, UPS systems and HVAC systems for Kennedy Space Center and Marshall Space Flight Center. Projects include new construction as well as renovations and expansions. His experience encompasses contract negotiations, detailed criteria development, preliminary and final design (structural and architectural), technical specifications, cost estimates and construction surveillance. Commercial experience includes schools, hospitals, banks, housing, agricultural, industrial facilities, and water and sewer systems. Other projects include energy and economic audits for NASA, the U.S. Navy, U.S. Air Force and U.S. Army.
Mr. Hargrove has also served his community as an active member of Huntsville First United Methodist Church. He has served as a Sunday School Teacher, as a member of the Administrative Board, and as a member of the Building Committee. Mr. Hargrove is an active member of the Greater Huntsville Rotary Club and works each year with the club’s fund raising efforts for local and worldwide charity. He has been a Boy Scout leader since 1978 and continues as Scoutmaster of Troop 15, the oldest continuously active Scout Troop in Alabama. |
