Art Smith is senior vice president and environmental counsel of NiSource Inc. He leads the company's comprehensive environmental, health and safety programs.
With extensive experience in environmental legal, policy and management matters, Smith has contributed to NiSource's international recognition for leadership in environmental stewardship and corporate sustainability.
Smith joined NIPSCO Industries, Inc., the predecessor of NiSource, in 1991 as manager of environmental affairs and counsel. He served as the company's environmental officer and counsel before being appointed to his current position in 2000. Prior to joining NiSource, Smith was the chief civil litigation specialist with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in Chicago and served as an assistant U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Illinois.
Smith has been a member of the Indiana Environmental Quality Service Council, being appointed by the governor in 2000. He also has served as chair of the U.S. Combined Heat and Power Association, and on the Boards of the Business Council for Sustainable Energy and the Solar Electric Power Association. In addition, Smith served as a Trustee of the Nature Conservancy, and on the Board of the Indiana Dunes Environmental Learning Center.
Smith has been recognized by the American Gas Association (AGA) Operating Section with a 2004 Award of Merit for his contributions to the natural gas industry. In 2005-06, Smith provided natural gas industry leadership by presenting Congressional testimony, by serving as co-chair of the pipeline association (INGAA) Climate Task Group, and by serving as members of both the INGAA and AGA CEO Climate Committees and as chair of AGA's Environmental Regulatory Action Committee.
Smith earned a bachelor's degree in biology from Columbia College in New York, two masters' degrees in environmental sciences from Columbia University and a juris doctor degree, with distinction, from the Seattle University School of Law. He is based at NiSource's corporate headquarters in Merrillville, Ind. |
