Art Perkins is in his fifth season with the Jaguars, joining as their west coast regional scout on May 13, 2003. He begins his first season as an executive scout of the west region, scouting the top collegiate players throughout the region. The previous six years were spent as a regional scout with the Baltimore Ravens. Perkins' experience as a professional football player, coach, and administrator spans more than 30 years. He also has some additional pro personnel responsibilities.
A fourth-round draft choice of the Los Angeles Rams in 1962, Perkins was named to the All-Rookie team as a running back. His playing career lasted nine years as a running back for the Rams (1962-64) and in the CFL with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers from 1964 to '66 and Edmonton Eskimos from 1967 to '70.
Perkins landed his first coaching job in 1972 as offensive coordinator for the semipro L.A. Mustangs. He directed the Mustangs' offense before joining Compton (Calif.) College, where he spent 24 years. Perkins started out as an offensive coach (1974-77) before being promoted to director of cooperative education. In that position (1977-79), he coordinated a program between upper level management of large American companies and college students to provide the students with practical experience and training that would enhance their employment opportunities after graduation.
Beginning in 1979, Perkins served as a physical education professor and head football coach at Compton College. He also held the title of athletic director from 1979 to '89. Perkins served as a personnel scout for the New York Jets (1994-96) before joining the Ravens in 1997. With both the Jets and Ravens, he worked closely with James Harris. He received a master's degree from Pepperdine University and also attended California State University at Dominguez Hills and North Texas State. He and his wife, Elise, have a son, Jacque. They live in Los Angeles. |
