The Baltimore Ravens selected Antwan Barnes with the 134th overall pick in the fourth round of the 2007 NFL Draft.
Highlights:
Barnes has proven to be a capable run stuffer, a cat-quick pass rusher and an intense collision-type hitter who finished his career as only the sixth player in school history to amass more that 200 tackles (224).
Barnes was an All-State first-team linebacker who was touted by several recruiting services as FIU's best-ever football recruit coming out of Norland High School. He was listed on the Miami Herald's Top-20 in the Miami-Dade County area and helped lead Norland to the Class 6A state championship as a senior.
During the regular season, he recorded 65 tackles, 30 of those for losses and 13 sacks. In five playoff games, he racked up another 51 tackles, 20 for losses, and 14 sacks, including posting two sacks and recovered a fumble in the state championship game. He also earned second-team All-County honors. As a Vikings' wrestler, Barnes was a two-time district champion, a regional runner-up and a state qualifier.
Barnes decided to enroll at Florida International in 2003, choosing the school over offers from Miami, Michigan State and Louisiana State. As a true freshman, he started all twelve games at strong-side outside linebacker. He collected 57 tackles (28 solos) with three sacks and led the squad with eleven stops for losses. He also caused a fumble, blocked a kick and deflected two passes.
In 2004, Barnes started just three of ten games at strong-side linebacker. He produced 53 tackles (30 solos) with three sacks and again led the team with eight stops behind the line of scrimmage. He caused two fumbles, blocked a kick and deflected two passes while also returning his first career interception for a touchdown.
Barnes was a reserve strong-side linebacker for the first two games of 2005 before the coaching staff moved him into the starting lineup at strong-side defensive end. He ranked sixth in the nation with eleven sacks and 24th nationally with 15.5 stops for losses. He added 45 tackles (27 solos) with a fumble recovery, three forced fumbles and a blocked kick to earn All-Sun Belt Conference first-team honors.
Barnes started all twelve games at strong-side end in 2006, ranking third in the NCAA Division 1- A ranks with an average of 1.88 stops behind the line of scrimmage per game. He made 69 tackles (42 solos) with four sacks. He recovered a fumble, deflected a pass and returned an interception for a score, helping the team rank fourth in the nation in pass defense (147.67 ypg), earning All-Sun Belt Conference first-team recognition. In 45 games at Florida International, Barnes started 38 times (21 at defensive end, 17 at linebacker). He is the sixth player in school history to record over 200 tackles, coming up with 224 tackles (127 solos). He holds the school career-records with 23 sacks for minus 164 yards and 57 stops for losses totaling 247 yards.
