Anthony (Tony) Vegliante was named Chief Human Resources Officer and Executive Vice President in May 2005. He reports to the Postmaster General and is a member of the Executive Committee. Vegliante oversees all aspects of Human Resources for the 700,000 career employee organization, including Labor Relations, Employee Development and Diversity, and Employee Resource Management.
Prior to his current position, Vegliante served as vice president, Labor Relations and was responsible for collective bargaining in the design, implementation and evaluation of national policies, procedures, programs and standards governing labor management relations, including contract negotiation, grievance and arbitration administration and equal employment opportunity complaint processing.
Vegliante has been involved in 15 National negotiations and has served as a chief spokesperson in six of them. He has successfully negotiated four major contracts with the national unions, has been involved in five interest arbitration hearings and has been used as an expert witness and strategist. In 2000, Vegliante served as the Postal Service’s arbitrator in the rural carrier negotiations and was successful in gaining productivity provisions for the first time in interest arbitration.
Vegliante began his postal career in 1978 as a distribution clerk in New Haven, CT. He quickly moved into labor relations, assuming positions of increasing responsibility both in New Haven and at the area office in Windsor prior to coming to Postal Service headquarters as an executive.
Earlier, Vegliante was Baltimore performance cluster district manager and he was awarded a gold medal from the prestigious Maryland Center for Quality and Productivity Award for superior business performance. Prior to that, he held several executive positions within Labor Relations, including managing contract administration, grievance and arbitration, and programs and policies.
A graduate of the University of Rhode Island in 1974, Vegliante earned a Bachelor of Science degree in economics and a Master of Science degree in business education from the University of Bridgeport in 1979. He received a second Master of Science degree in industrial relations in 1997 from the University of New Haven. He also has completed the Summer Executive Program at the University of Southern California.
