Dr. Peters has a national and international reputation as an expert in clinical diabetes research and practice. She treats hundreds of patients with diabetes, both in a Beverly Hills Center as well as in a free clinic in one of the poorest areas of Los Angeles. In addition she has a 20 year history of performing clinical diabetes research and has authored two diabetes books, one for health care professionals and one for patients.
As an advisor to Xeno, Dr. Peters will help with the translation of research to patient care and will be able to represent the company’s research to patients and providers throughout the world.
Biography
Anne L. Peters, MD, is an internationally respected diabetologist and author of Conquering Diabetes (Penguin Group, 2005). She is director of the Clinical Diabetes Programs at the University of Southern California and also is in charge of developing one of the nation’s largest outreach programs for community-based diabetes prevention and treatment, which is comprised of two clinics -- one near Beverly Hills, where many of her patients are members of the Hollywood and entertainment industries, and the other in East Los Angeles, where she cares for patients with no health insurance.
Dr. Peters graduated from Wesleyan University, in Middletown, Connecticut. She received her medical degree from the University of Chicago (AOA) before proceeding to Stanford University Medical Center in Palo Alto, California for her training in internal medicine. She then performed an endocrinology fellowship at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.
Dr. Peters is involved in numerous professional organizations and activities, and has written over 100 publications and spoken at hundreds of lectures, educating physicians and other health care providers. Dr. Peters’ research has been published in leading medical journals, and she has been quoted in articles in The Los Angeles Times, The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times, which published her Op-Ed piece about helping Gary Hall, Jr. win the Olympic Gold medal in swimming in 2000. She was featured in an hour-long segment of “Larry King Live” discussing her book and diabetes. She is on the editorial board of Diabetes Care, a leading diabetes journal, and is co-author of Davidson’s Diabetes Mellitus: Diagnosis and Treatment, 5th edition. She has been selected to be a National Institutes of Health funded principal investigator on the “Look AHEAD” program, which is studying the benefits of diet and exercise on diabetes. She also has grant funding from the American Diabetes Foundation, the Keck Foundation, and the Institute for Healthcare Improvement to study diabetes prevention and to develop better methods for delivering health care. Additionally, over her career she has received funding from: Pfizer and Aventis Pharmaceuticals, National Association for Public Health and Hospital Institute, Diagnostic Chemicals Limited, Platinum Performance, Lilly and Takeda Clinical Research, MiniMed Technology, Pfizer Health Solutions, Parke-Davis Medical Research, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Sankyo Pharmaceuticals, Sandoz Nutrition, Warner Lambert Company and Lipha Pharmaceuticals.
Currently she is on the Research Foundation Board for the American Diabetes Association and is a past board member of the Los Angeles JDRF and the Venice Family Clinic. She is an active consultant with a number of companies, including Abbott, Takeda, Lilly, Aventis, LifeScan and Amylin. In addition to being on the editorial board for Diabetes Care, she is on the editorial boards for: Diabetes, Obesity and CVD (DOC), Geriatrics, and Preventive Cardiology. |
