Ann McCaig was elected to Suncor Energy’s Board of Directors in November 1995. She is a member of the environment, health and safety committee and the human resources and compensation committee. Mrs. McCaig is the president of VPI Investments Ltd., a private investment holding company.
Born in Tisdale, Saskatchewan, Mrs. McCaig received her bachelor of education degree from the University of Saskatchewan in 1961 and worked as an English and history teacher in Calgary and Regina from 1961 to 1963. She also worked as a youth counsellor at Lakeview United Church in Regina and helped establish one of the first group homes for foster children in that city. She moved to Calgary with her husband in 1970.
Mrs. McCaig has long been an active member of the community, at the University of Calgary, in the business community and in a volunteer capacity with many local and national organizations, including United Way, Banff Centre Foundation and chair of the City of Calgary Police Interpretive Centre.
Mrs. McCaig was appointed to the University of Calgary’s board of governors in 1984 and served as chancellor from 1995 to 1998. She played an integral role on the search committee that selected the university’s president in 1989. In 1994, she became the eighth chancellor of the University of Calgary. At the conclusion of her term in 1998, the university conferred upon her the title of chancellor emeritus in recognition of her outstanding role as chancellor and her 14 years of service to the university. She served as the co-chair of the university's Faculty of Management Delivering Results $13 million campaign, and she also served as vice-chair of the $40 million Building on the Vision national campaign.
Mrs. McCaig is chair of the Alberta Adolescent Recovery Centre, a trustee of the Killam Estate, chair of the Calgary Health Trust, honorary chair of the Alberta Bone and Joint Institute, and a director of the Calgary Stampede Foundation. She co-chaired the Alberta Children's Hospital Foundation All for One - All for Kids $50 million campaign.
In 1993, Mrs. McCaig received the Canada 125 Award. In 1995, she was recognized as the YWCA Woman of Distinction in the category of lifetime achievements. In 1997, she received the Paul Harris Fellowship Rotary International Award and, in 2001 she received an honorary doctor of laws from the University of Calgary. In October 2004, she received the Alberta Order of Excellence and was named a member of the Order of Canada.
Ann McCaig has three children.
