Dr. Andrew Zabel is a pediatric neuropsychologist and research scientist at the Kennedy Krieger Institute. He is also an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.
Biographical Sketch:
Dr. Zabel received his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Drexel University of Philadelphia, PA in 2000, and completed his internship training at the Kennedy Krieger Institute and Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Dr. Zabel also completed a 2-year postdoctoral fellowship in Pediatric Neuropsychology at the Kennedy Krieger Institute and Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He is a licensed psychologist in Maryland. He joined the Hopkins/KKI faculty in 2002. He is active in the mentoring programs at the Kennedy Krieger Institute, and participates in the neuropsychological training of externs, pre-doctoral interns, and post-doctoral residents.
Research Summary:
Dr. Zabel is interested in the transition of adolescents with developmental disabilities into adulthood, with a specific emphasis upon children and adolescents with conditions such as shunted hydrocephalus, autism, and Fragile X syndrome. He recently began a study to determine the usefulness of serial neuropsychological testing as a means of assessing shunt integrity in children/adolescents with spina bifida. Continuing studies involve the validation of the Kennedy Independence Scales - Spina Bifida version (KIS-SB), an instrument designed to assess executive functioning and specialized adaptive skills related to spina bifida. Additional research interests include the use of adaptive cueing devices to help children accommodate for working memory and prospective memory deficits. |
