As director of Institute Partnerships and special assistant to President Wayne Clough, Andrea Ashmore helps facilitate dialogue between Georgia Tech and its neighboring community leaders. The office, which directs Tech's outreach initiatives, plays a key role directing resources that meet the needs of the community, whether it involves tutoring, job training, or meeting space.
During her six-year tenure as Director of Public Relations at Spelman College before coming to Georgia Tech in 1997, Ashmore assisted in many community service projects, including the construction of a house for low-income residents. However, joining Tech has allowed her to focus more on outreach.
Ashmore's interest in community service stems from her childhood in Chicago, where she was inspired by her mother, a community activist who worked with neighborhood teens. Like her mother, Ashmore is particularly interested in projects that involve children. She has been involved with Big Brothers and Big Sisters for many years and serves as a board member for the American Red Cross.
"I saw at an early age that community outreach works. If you come up with a solution, and go on to employ it, you can bring about change," commented Ashmore. |
