Mr. Ernst practices corporate, administrative, public utility, energy and telecommunications law.
Mr. Ernst is member in charge of Dykema’s Energy, Telecommunications and Public Utilities Practice. Mr. Ernst is general counsel to the Michigan Electric Cooperative Association, Great Lakes Energy Cooperative and Midwest Energy Cooperative. He represents rural electric cooperatives in Michigan, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Wisconsin and Illinois. He is lead outside counsel to International Transmission Company. Dykema has been chosen MCI WorldCom’s litigation counsel throughout the 6th Circuit (Federal).
He is a former Assistant Attorney General for the State of Michigan (1975-1979); and a former consultant to the United States Department of Defense, Department of Energy and General Services Administration on utility related matters.
Prior to his law career, Mr. Ernst served as Assistant Attorney General in Michigan, working in the state's Special Litigation Division on utility matters, and in the Commerce/Agriculture Division.
Mr. Ernst has written several articles regarding electric rate regulation.

Represents a broad variety of entities in regulatory and corporate matters, including all of the state’s rural electric cooperatives (consumer-owned utilities), Edison Sault Electric Company, DTE Energy Marketing, Inc. (unregulated affiliates), Sempra Energy, Energy America, Tenaska, Meijer Corporation, Metro Energy L.L.C., Eastern Michigan University, Michigan Technological University, Asahi International, and other entities
Represents rural electric cooperatives in Indiana, Kansas, Illinois and Wisconsin
In telecommunication matters:
Primary regulatory counsel to MCI WorldCom and its affiliates
Represented Ameritech Michigan, the Michigan Cable Television Association, Cellular One, and The Michigan Cellular Users Group, among others in telecommunications matters
Represents the Michigan Competitive Telecommunication Providers Association, an association of telecommunications providers which includes MCI WorldCom, AT&T other new entrants in the emerging local markets
