Alan Stewart is a member of the Intellectual Property Team in the firm's Appleton office. He advises clients in matters related to the identification, acquisition and protection of intellectual property, including patents, trademarks, copyrights, and trade secrets, in the United States and in other countries. His clients range from solo inventors and small companies to large corporations, with both national and international sales. Alan prosecutes intellectual property rights for his clients, as well as supporting litigation involving the intellectual property rights of his clients. In addition, he is active in assisting and advising new and growing businesses with regard to intellectual property and general business issues.
Prior to joining the firm, Alan practiced with a large intellectual property boutique firm. His practice involved providing patent, trademark and copyright counsel to clients ranging from large multi-national corporations to solo inventors and small business owners. Alan's work included prosecution and acquisition of intellectual property rights and supporting litigation of intellectual property rights for his clients. These clients were involved with a wide range of general mechanical inventions, medical devices (including coronary imaging, therapy, and surgery, and cardiac rhythm management), telecommunications, business methods, and computer software.
Before practicing as a patent attorney, Alan was a consultant and project manager in the area of design, procurement and implementation of complex information systems, especially systems related to the collection and use of geographic information. In addition to providing consulting and project management services, he managed a data conversion operation for a large multi-national engineering firm and an e-business delivering Application Service Provider (ASP) services. Alan is a registered patent attorney and is admitted to practice in Wisconsin, Kentucky and Minnesota, where he is a member of the respective state bar associations. He is a member of the American Bar Association, the American and Minnesota Intellectual Property Law Associations and the Outagamie County Bar Association. Alan received his law degree from the University of Wisconsin Law School. He received his bachelor's degree and master's degree in civil and environmental engineering from the University of Wisconsin, where he was a member of the Chi Epsilon, the National Civil Engineering Honor Society.
