Lan focuses his practice on intellectual property, counseling and advising clients on patent strategies and management of patent portfolios. He performs patentability searches and investigations as well as investigations into patent infringment, right-to-make/use and patent non-infringement/invalidity. The patent applications Al prepares and prosecutes include those in various electrical and electro-mechanical arts, including computer systems, networks, voice and data communications, electrical and electronic components, sensors, instrumentation, test equipment, image processing, simulation and virtual reality systems, defense electronic systems, software and business methods. Al counsels clients on trade secret protection, trademark strategies and protection. He has performed trademark searches and investigations, prepared and prosecuted trademark applications and negotiated settlement agreements in trademark disputes. Copyright work is also a significant part of Al’s experience. He has counseled and advised clients on copyright protection; prepared and prosecuted applications for copyright registration, including rights in software, databases, and web sites; and performed software copyright infringement and non-infringement investigations. He also has counseled and advised clients on licensing intellectual property, technology, and know how, and has prepared software license agreements, including end user license agreements. Al is active outside of his practice, serving as a council member of the Cleveland Bar Association’s Intellectual Property Section and editor of the quarterly newsletter. He is also a member of the American and Ohio Bar Associations and is active in the American and Cleveland Intellectual Property Law Associations. Al has worked in various engineering specialties, namely defense electronic systems, including test equipment, training and simulation equipment, for electronics firms such as AAI Corporation and Statistica, Inc. He was employed with Fay, Sharpe, Fagan, Minnich & McKee from 1998 to 2005 as a law clerk and then associate before joining Calfee in 2005. |
